Q: How much does Cub Scouts cost?

A: There are two parts to Cub Scout dues:
National Dues: $85 per youth, paid directly to Scouting America. This covers 12 months from the date you register and includes insurance and access to the national program.
Pack 554 Dues: $150 per Scout per year. These cover awards, supplies, activities, and more. Pack dues are not due at sign-up and can be reduced or completely eliminated by participating in our fall fundraiser (popcorn sales). Final pack dues are typically collected in October, after the fundraiser ends.

Q: Who can join Cub Scouts?

A: Cub Scouts is open to boys and girls in grades K–5. Children must be at least 5 years old and enrolled in kindergarten to join as a Lion Scout.

Q: When and where does the pack meet?

A: Pack 554 typically meets on Monday evenings at 6:00 PM. Most meetings are held at American Legion Post 554 in League City, with occasional outdoor or off-site events.

Q: Do parents need to stay during meetings?

A: Yes—Cub Scouting is a family program. A parent or guardian should stay during meetings, especially for younger Scouts. Parents are encouraged to participate, help, or even lead!

Q: Can siblings participate?

A: Yes! Siblings are welcome at most events and activities. Many of our pack events are designed to be fun for the whole family.

Q: How do we earn badges and ranks?

A: Scouts complete adventures with their den and at home. When all required adventures are completed, they earn their rank badge. Leaders help track and submit advancements.

Q: What if my child joins mid-year?

A: No problem! Scouts can join at any time during the year. They’ll be placed with their grade-level den and can work on catching up if they want to.

Q: What kinds of activities do Cub Scouts do?

A: Our pack participates in activities like:

  • Camping and hiking
  • Community service and parades
  • Pinewood Derby car racing
  • Rain gutter regattas
  • STEM activities
  • Games, crafts, and pack parties
  • Fishing
  • And more!

Q: How can I volunteer with the pack?

A: We’re 100% volunteer-run and always welcome help! You can assist with events, become a den leader, serve on the pack committee, or chair an event. Just let the Cubmaster or your den leader know you’re interested.

Q: Do I need prior experience to volunteer?

A: Not at all! Most volunteers are parents new to Scouting. We provide training, resources, and lots of support. Enthusiasm and dependability are more important than Scouting experience.

Q: What is a den leader, and how do I become one?

A: Den leaders guide a small group of Scouts (usually in the same grade) through the program. They plan and lead monthly den meetings, track progress, and communicate with parents. To become a den leader, talk to the Cubmaster. You’ll complete Safeguarding Youth Training and an online Den Leader Training course.

Q: What is the pack committee, and what do committee members do?

A: The pack committee supports the Pack by handling planning, communication, budgeting, record-keeping, and logistics. Committee members attend monthly meetings and vote on pack business. Roles include Treasurer, Advancement Chair, Secretary, Membership Chair, Recruitment Chair, New Member Coordinator, and more.

Q: What does it mean to chair an event?

A: Event chairs organize one-time events like the Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold Banquet, campouts, or service projects. Chairs coordinate logistics, recruit helpers, manage supplies, and work with leadership to stay on budget. You don’t have to do it alone—we’ll help!

Q: What are the responsibilities of a Cub Scout volunteer?

A: Responsibilities vary, but may include:

  • Showing up consistently and on time
  • Setting a positive example for Scouts
  • Following Safeguarding Youth Training guidelines
  • Helping with setup, cleanup, or logistics at meetings/events
  • Communicating with leaders and parents as needed

Q: I can’t commit to a big role. Can I still help?

A: Absolutely! Many roles are short-term or event-specific. We need people to help with setup, food, registration, games, and more. Even an hour of your time can make a big difference!
